Eldon A. Siegman, 76, of Lisle, a retired engineer who used his knack for numbers and words to teach his children and others, died of heart failure Tuesday, April 23, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Born in Houston, Mr. Siegman earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Rice University at age 19. “He was a brilliant man who never forgot something once he learned it,” said his wife of 55 years, Nora Lee. A resident of Lisle since 1986, Mr. Siegman was known for helping his children and others in his neighborhood with their homework by using clever games. “He used to have the kids try and stump him by trying to find a word he didn’t know and couldn’t spell,” his wife said. “He’d give them a penny every time they succeeded, but believe me, they didn’t earn too much.” He helped children with math and science, giving them learning tips and boosting their confidence along the way. “There was one neighbor girl who was nearly flunking chemistry, but by the time he was done, she was one of the better students,” his wife said. Mr. Siegman worked as a chemical engineer for Amoco Corp. for nearly 37 years. A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Navy and was a retired lieutenant with the Naval Reserve. He was treasurer of the Pine Hill Homes Association in Lisle. Other survivors include two sons, James and Alan, and eight grandchildren. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Front and Kingston Streets, Lisle.
