Sven T. Nylen, retired engineer, a resident of Dayton, NV, passed away at his home on May 1, 2002. Born in Chicago, IL at 11539 Eggleston St. in Roseland to Sven Thure Nylen and Ann Charlolta Anderson on June 21, 1915. His father Thure Nylen, born March 17, 1885 in South Bend, IN served as a U.S. Mail carrier from 1907 until his retirement in 1945. His mother Anna was born in Trohallten, Sweden in 1886 and was a loving homemaker. The family consisted of three children, June Sundeen, Sven T. Nylen Jr. and Robert Alfred Nylen, all deceased. He attended schools in the Roseland area, going to grammar school, and then graduating from Fenger High School in 1931. He had a tremendous love of music and played the cornet in the school band. As a boy he enjoyed caddying at the different golf courses for 5 cent tips. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and enjoyed listening to their games on the radio when he was growing up. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the Armour Institute of Technology (Illinois Institute of Technology) in the class of 1936. He received a scholarship to attend Armour after his high school principal recommended him. He had a long and successful career in the construction industry in the Chicago area. He worked for Warner Construction Company and then with his partner George Farrell he formed the Farrell-Nylen Construction Company in the 1950s. The company was active in the construction of schools and did extensive construction work for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Farrell-Nylen was dissolved in 1967 and Sven went to work for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart as a construction consultant. After more than 36 years of service in 1983 he received a Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding work from the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. He received the award from Sister Erma Lunghi, chief executive officer Columbus-Cuneo-Cabrini Medical Center and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart on Sept. 23, 1983, and it read, “In recognition of outstanding service and loyalty to the Columbus-Cuneo-Cabrini Medical Center while serving as construction consultant for 36 years. His dedication to the philosophy and mission of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart has been an inspiration to all who worked with him”. Sven and his wife Ann and children lived in Riverside, IL for more than 30 years. Since he retired he has been a resident of Carson City and Dayton, NV for the past 18 years. His greatest accomplishment and joy in his life was his family. He took great pride in his family and loved to tell people about them. His family loved and adored him and will miss his wonderful sense of humor and his kind and loving ways. Beloved husband of Ann, nee Dunkovich for 63 years; loving father of Pat (Bruce) Douglas-Woodruff of Reno, NV, Penny (David) Zarwell of Hubertus, WI, Paula Sestito of Chicago, Sven T. III (Michele) of Coral Springs, FL and Robert A. (Dorothy) of Dayton, NV; devoted grandfather of 13; great-grandfather of three; dear brother of the late June (the late Earl) Sundeen and Robert (Pat); fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Funeral service Tuesday, May 7, 11 a.m. at the Adolf-Berwyn Funeral Home, Ltd., 2921 S. Harlem Ave., Berwyn. Interment Elmwood Cemetery.
