Two dump-truck drivers were ticketed Monday for dumping contaminated soil in a vacant lot in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood.

Police identified the drivers as Helius DeGuevara, 34, of Berwyn, and Mario Martinez, 27, of Cicero. Both worked for J. Jasso Trucking Inc.

A hazardous materials alert was called at about 9 p.m. after someone became suspicious about trucks dumping soil at a secluded lot at 59th Street and Marshfield Avenue, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.

The soil was found to be contaminated with gasoline, from an old gas station in the 5600 block of South Western Avenue, and police and the Chicago Department of Environment halted work at the site where several other trucks were waiting to be loaded, according to Knight and police.
