Sandy A. Smith, 61, of Des Plaines, a retired production supervisor for a Morton Grove car parts maker, died of cancer Saturday, May 4, in his home. Born and raised in Hurley, Va., Mr. Smith graduated from Hurley High School. After moving to Chicago in 1962, he joined John Crane Inc. and supervised production for the auto parts firm. He retired in the late 1990s. “He had a great sense of humor; he found life very amusing,” said his son, John. Mr. Smith bowled and golfed in leagues throughout the Chicago area for many years and enjoyed watching NASCAR races. Other survivors include his wife, Martha; three brothers, Glen, John and Thomas; two sisters, Donita Chafin and Joanne Braden; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oehler Funeral Home, 555 Lee St., Des Plaines.
