What a disappointment it must have been for the two young people who were prevented from attending their prom together because of the Jacobs High School rule. The young lady, who could not ride the bus because of a conflict of schedules with other community activities, is to be commended for not giving up that part of her dream.
What is particularly disappointing to me is the lack of brainpower application by the school administrators. No person or group can write a rule that equitably covers all situations. As I have told managers and executives who reported to me in my many years in corporate life: “We pay you to know when to deviate from established policy or procedure.”
Of course doing that takes some analysis and thought and the courage of your conviction. Applying rules is the easy way out; it takes no thought. The position reportedly taken by the Jacobs High School administrators is a terrible example to young people, whom we are teaching to investigate and analyze the known facts of a situation before reaching a conclusion or decision.
