The reason our children aren’t prolific in history is because the teachers aren’t delivering it in an exciting venue (“Students’ `abysmal’ U.S. history scores alarm educators,” News, May 10). Our children have been raised in a very animated society, where action is part of the learning process. Teachers need to be taught to use action-filled techniques in all subjects in order for our children to remember and even care about what is being taught.
In other words, because of the techniques that are being used to teach history today, our children can find no connection or relevance for retaining that knowledge. We as parents, teachers and preachers have failed our children, not the reverse. They love to learn when learning is exciting and fun and, when it is, it sticks with them for a lifetime.
