Karen S. Evers, 44, of Lake Zurich, who battled cancer for nine years, motivated others by never giving up. For the last three years, Mrs. Evers, who was a marketing and e-commerce consultant at Chubb Insurance in Chicago, inspired her co-workers to participate in the Race for the Cure, an annual breast cancer fundraising event in Chicago. “In her first year in the event, Chubb formed a corporate team of about 20 to 25 co-workers,” recalled her husband, Richard. “The second year, that number doubled.” Born and raised in Wheaton, Mrs. Evers died Thursday, May 23, in her home. She was a graduate of Wheaton Central High School and Northwestern University in Evanston, where she received a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology. After graduation, Mrs. Evers began working in marketing at Transamerica Insurance Co. in Chicago and was transferred to the company’s Los Angeles office in 1983. A year later, she accepted a marketing position with Kemper Insurance in Long Grove. For the past three years, she worked at Chubb. Mrs. Evers also enjoyed golfing, skiing and wind surfing. “She never accepted her cancer as terminal,” said her husband, adding that his wife had already planned her timetable for work next week. Other survivors include her parents, Chester and Phyllis Sudds; and brothers Alan and Andrew Sudds. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Gary Memorial Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St., Wheaton.
