I recently took my first long distance train trip on Amtrak to New Orleans. There was not one bit of security, and I was appalled at Amtrak’s disregard for its passengers’ safety.
There were no metal detectors, no X-ray machines–they barely looked at our tickets and never once asked for any kind of identification. We simply rolled our baggage onto the train and hoisted it onto the luggage racks.
There was even a passenger on board trying to sell drugs to one of the employees in the lounge car.
This would be the perfect way to transport drugs, weapons and explosives in large suitcases.
In this day and age I would not feel safe traveling on Amtrak again.
Also, not once did they announce safety procedures in case of an emergency.
Does the FBI know this? I called Amtrak several times and got responses of “That’s the way it is” or “I’ll make a note of it.”
Amtrak, I know your riders are dwindling, and if you don’t shape up, you will have none.
