I want to compliment the mayor on his efforts to “green” up Chicago, especially on his bold new plan to put gardens atop city buildings to conserve energy and fight pollution.

Every time we have a windy day, I think, “what a waste!” Wind alone, if harnessed, could satisfy all the energy needs of the planet.

How about windmills atop city buildings, or along the lakeshore, perhaps on breakwaters in the lake? We have some unique geography that is conducive to it. It would make Chicago a true city of the future, the first increasingly environmentally friendly major city.

Some will complain about the views, but as people start to perceive windmills as answers to pollution, perceptions will change and they’ll be won over. Plus, if painted cows can be a hit, why not sleek, futuristic windmills? Environmentally friendly and purposeful art, adding new meaning to the name “The Windy City.”
