Wright “Doc” Freeland, 80, of Barrington, a Christian counselor and former veterinarian, died of heart failure Wednesday, May 29, in Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He was born and raised in Millington, Mich., and received a veterinary medicine degree in 1945 from Michigan State University in East Lansing. He opened a veterinary clinic in Rantoul, Ill., and worked as a country veterinarian until 1968, when he joined the Campus Crusade for Christ ministry. After moving to Barrington in 1972, Mr. Freeland began working as a counselor from his home. “People were looking for Christian ways to solve their problems,” his daughter Kathy Mercer said. “He felt that it meant a lot to him in his own life and he wanted to turn around and help others. He was a real encourager.” Mr. Freeland retired in the early 1990s. Other survivors include his wife, Hazel; a son, Dick; another daughter, Barb Widstrom; a sister, JoAnn; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St., Barrington. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Village Church of Barrington, 1600 E. Main St.
