Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Perhaps it’s time to look into the roots of your fatigue. A story in the June issue of the Mayo Clinic Women’s HealthSource discusses various medical conditions that could bring on fatigue.
If your thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism), for example, you may feel tired and irritable and have muscle weakness. If your red blood cell count drops, you may be anemic. Infections such as hepatitis also leave you tired, and sleep problems can rob people of their normal alertness.
It is important to see a doctor if you’ve been excessively tired for several weeks and the problem doesn’t seem to be related to stress or overcommitment. If no medical causes can be found, try lifestyle changes, including a gradual increase in exercise, practicing better sleep habits and eating a healthy diet.
