The May 26 editorial “Research cloning and life” was excellent, and I appreciated the comment that “Whether a days-old embryo is entitled to all the protections of a fully formed person is a matter best resolved by each American’s religious beliefs or sense of morality.”

Finally, the correct analysis.

So often when I discuss this question with religionists, I say that cloning for the purposes of medical research is a matter of science that can benefit humanity so much by the eventual eradication of terrible diseases. I am then told that no, this is the murder of a human being and must be prohibited.

When I try to tell them that their illogical view of “murder” stems from their religious beliefs, they simply don’t want to acknowledge that because it weakens their case.

I hope that we will all recognize that in this important area of medical research, it is best to keep our religious beliefs out of it for the sake of advancing humanity’s best interests.
