I was delighted to see the article about “The Cross at the Crossroads” (“Landmark speaks volumes; A few critics aside, residents of Effingham are proud to claim the largest cross in the United States,” Metro, May 21). Every year six of my family members take a trip to a different part of the country, and last year we loved the Southeast. We were on the way to Orlando when the World Trade Center was hit. We continued with our trip, but had to skip several stops because they were closed down.
Finally on our way home through southern Illinois, we came upon this huge cross and had no idea who had put it there. But I must say it was very comforting to see after the horrendous events of Sept. 11.
