Doris Grace Armbruster, 86, formerly of Aurora, a founder of the Child Welfare Society of Aurora, died of heart failure Tuesday, June 4, in Heartland Nursing Home in Sarasota, Fla. Mrs. Armbruster attended Northwestern University, where she was enrolled in business courses. She settled in Aurora in 1938 and began raising her family. As a founder of the Child Welfare Society of Aurora, Mrs. Armbruster devoted hundreds of hours to the group’s various causes. She was also a past president of the White Cross Auxiliary of Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora. Known for her radiant smile, quick wit and ability to make all those in her presence feel comfortable, Mrs. Armbruster was always up for an impromptu game of cards. Family members said her zest for life was no more apparent than at Halloween, when she loved to dress up in costume for her family and neighborhood children. “She was a very uplifting, optimistic person, but also a realist,” said her granddaughter, Debi Deuter. “She could also be very private, except when it came to her family and close-knit group of friends.” Mrs. Armbruster was also an avid reader, who loved biographies. Other survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Lynch; a grandson, Don Taylor Jr.; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday until the time of services at 11 a.m. in Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Pl., Aurora.
