When you reach into your mailbox, you don’t want to be stung by anything worse than a bill that’s bigger than expected.

Mailboxes, however, are frequent nesting spots for stinging insects.

So the U.S. Postal Service is urging its customers to do all they can to keep themselves and their mail carriers safe from bees, wasps, mosquitoes, fleas, spiders and other pests.

Helpful tips:

Inspect your mailbox daily for insect nests, the postal service advises.

Keep the door closed so the bugs can’t get inside.

The postal service also recommends against planting flowers near mailboxes.

The nectar attracts bees and wasps, which may not take kindly to strangers invading their territory.
