Nice job on your story about binge drinking at the University of Illinois (“On campus, many major in bingeing; `Everyone does it,’ students claim,” Page 1, May 26). You’ve now given any parent who wants to send his or her child to U. of I. the impression that every student in Champaign is an alcohol-crazed delinquent and that every fraternity house is an “Animal House”-like sty.

The story used biased language and a heavy-handed, aren’t-these-kids-the-worst tone throughout the piece. The quotes made the students out to be drunken fools, and nearby bar owners to seem irresponsible.

Did any reporter (this story had four) or an editor think to include a quote from one or more students who don’t drink during finals week?
