The Museum of Science and Industry will host the first Chicago public demonstration of the Segway Human Transporter, a self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device. Created by Dean Kamen, the Segway HT works with body movements. When a person leans slightly forward, the Segway HT moves forward. When leaning back, it moves back.

Segway HT is powered by an electric motor with zero emissions and can go about three times faster than walking speed. It balances with gyroscopes. The Illinois House has approved a bill to authorize the transporters’ use on sidewalks at speeds up to 8 m.p.h.

Visitors 18 and older will be able to test the Segway from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the museum rotunda. The Segway will remain on display through the summer. Museum admission for Chicago residents is $8 adults, $4.25 children ages 3 to 11 and $6.75 seniors. Residents outside Chicago area: $9 adults, $5 children, $7.50 seniors.
