The Tribune is correct in asserting that evidence exists that single-sex schools are an option worth exploring (Editorial, May 31). As a graduate of such an institution, I have experienced learning in an atmosphere that encourages studies and personal growth, without the social distractions that can derail such endeavors.
As a current member of the board of directors of the same institution, I can proudly point to the fact that 100 percent of the Class of 2002 is going on to post-secondary education. This is exceptional proof that this model can work in today’s world.
Recently, one of the students was asked why she chose a same-sex school. She thought for a moment and responded, “This is a place where I can define who I am before someone else does it for me.” This sentiment doesn’t just hold for young women but for young men too. It is time that we embrace this model as an alternative for parents and students.
