I am writing in response to “Successful charter school set to close” (Page 1, June 1), about the closing of Governors State University Charter School. Frankly, I am appalled that a board of education would place its own needs for bureaucracy ahead of the educational needs of its students, particularly when those students are enrolled in a proven school that has consistently demonstrated success.

This situation is indicative of the sweeping disregard and disdain that the Illinois General Assembly, State Board of Education and local boards of education have for our children and their educational needs.

The only governance a local school board should have over a locally established charter school is control over any local funding of that school.
