Joyce Hewitt’s “Bush’s visit” (Voice of the people, June 4) filled me with disgust and anger.

I am the daughter of a World War II veteran who was lucky enough to survive a year and a half of bombing runs over Germany.

I’m also the mother of an Air National Guard pilot who has deployed to Turkey and Kuwait, flying over northern and southern Iraq.

After Sept. 11, he flew constantly over American cities to provide security. To this day, his unit is still on alert status.

It is an insult to suggest that being a member of the Air National Guard is anything other than honorably serving your country.

I, too, have visited the cemetery in Normandy, France, and felt it was fitting that President Bush chose to be there for Memorial Day. It was important that he used the occasion to remind us all of the great sacrifices made by Americans in liberating Europe.
