In its June 9 editorial “Foreign visitors and fingerprints,” the Chicago Tribune seemed to endorse racial and ethnic profiling of visitors to the U.S. saying,” . . . it makes sense to focus initially on those whose backgrounds lump them–however unfairly–with people known to have committed or planned serious crimes.”
What’s more, the editorial writer blames the need to profile on the terrorists. This amounts to justifying the pulling over of all African-American motorists by police because many criminals who have driven cars have been African-American.
Ridiculous indeed.
So what is the government to do? Keep the status quo? Absolutely not. If we are to register foreign visitors entering the U.S., then every foreign visitor, from Australia to Zimbabwe, should have his or her photograph and fingerprints taken. This is the fairest way; this is the American way.
