After looking over Phil Rogers’ picks for the All-City team (Tribune, June 14), I took it upon myself to defend the North Side. I couldn’t find any logic behind a few of his picks.
Even though I’m not a Sox fan, I’d still vote for Paul Konerko, Ray Durham, Carlos Lee and maybe even Kenny Lofton. But Royce Clayton over Alex Gonzalez? Why? Because Gonzalez hasn’t been the same since he injured his hamstring? What about Clayton? He’s been hovering over the Mendoza Line ever since he put on a Sox uniform. You wanted A-Rod, you got Clayton. Deal with it.
Let’s not forget Magglio Ordonez over Sammy Sosa. Rogers says Sosa’s not a team player . . . it’s hard not to be a team player when, statistically, you are the team. The only possible argument for Ordonez is that he fields better than Sosa, but let’s face it, Ordonez is no Ichiro Suzuki either.
Finally, when did Eric Hinske become part of the equation? Every team makes a bad personnel decision here and there. By the way, Sox fans, thanks for lending us Sosa for all these years. He’s no Ordonez, but we like him anyway.
