The fact that a few graduating seniors out of the 900 attending the all-night graduation party for New Trier High School students chose to break the rules and drink, either before or during the party, hardly seems to be news that belonged on the front of the Metro section in the June 7 Tribune. I was one of the 120 parent chaperones of the party and the incidents of drinking were such a minor part of the night of celebration that it is really unfair to highlight those as the main story.

The organizers of the party anticipated that a few kids would find a way to drink despite the best efforts to prevent it, and had the procedures in place to take care of the problems without disrupting the party for the majority of attendees. They are to be congratulated for a job well done.

It’s sad that a few teenagers felt the need to drink as a part of their graduation celebration, but it’s not news. The news is that 900 graduates chose to spend the night of their graduation with their friends at a party that they knew would not include drinking.
