I was one of 12,000 cyclists who pedaled along Lake Shore Drive on June 9 as part of Chicago’s Bike the Drive celebration. While the temporary shift from four- to two-wheeled traffic was inspiring, the overall experience left me feeling blue.
Next to one of the most beautiful waterways in the nation, Lake Michigan, I found myself focusing on potholes and concrete crash barriers. Our behemoth roadways seem engineered to separate us from nature and one another.
It was nice to see so many bikes and so many smiles. But there was no looking past the miles of paved-over Earth.
If only our city forefathers had the foresight to hop on a bike instead of trouncing on Mother Nature.
