Donald T. Hayes, 70, of Palatine, a retired marketing manager with Uno-Ven Co., died of heart failure Wednesday, June 19, in Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights. Born and raised in Minneapolis, he graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minn. After high school he joined the Army and fought in the Korean War. After his return he joined the marketing department at Pure Oil in Minneapolis, which later became Union Oil Co., Unocal Corp. and Uno-Ven. He was transferred to an office in Arlington Heights in the early 1970s. By the time he retired in 1994, he had become a manager of domestic crude supply for Uno-Ven, a joint oil-refining marketing venture between Unocal and the Venezuelan oil industry. For several years he was a Eucharistic minister at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Palatine and for patients in Northwest Community Hospital. “He was fun to be around. He was always smiling and had a positive outlook,” said his daughter, Susan. An avid gardener, golfer and traveler, Mr. Hayes enjoyed visiting relatives in Australia and touring Ireland. Other survivors include his wife, Caroline; two sons, Thomas and Timothy; two more daughters, Patricia Oh and Joan Cunningham; two sisters, Kathleen Meyer and Margaret Bednarz; and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday in Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home, followed by a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, 467 N. Benton St., Palatine.
