Indians seem to believe that they stole Kashmir fair and square, and they wish Pakistan and the Kashmir Muslims would just go away and quit bothering them.
The historic grievances in Kashmir will never be settled until India acknowledges its own wrongs in taking that predominantly Muslim territory. The fate of Kashmir will never be settled until Pakistan acknowledges that there are parts of that land that do not want to be a part of Pakistan. And the peace of the Kashmiris will not take place until the people themselves–Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists–are able to reconcile themselves to living together in some sort of equality.
Like Muslim fundamentalism, Hindu nationalism has an intolerance that prevents it from recognizing and accepting the faiths of others. Religious tolerance is essential if that troubled region is ever to experience any peace.
