The Tribune’s editorial on America’s indifference to World Cup soccer made me realize we might be missing out on a good idea for peace. For example, Secretary of State Colin Powell could tell the Israelis and Palestinians that if they can learn to live in peace with each other, we’ll subsidize both of their national soccer teams. If that’s not enough, we could even build stadiums and practice facilities for them.
Because soccer is loved by so much of the world, this could even become a global program run by the United Nations–practice peace and tolerance of others and you get soccer funding. Seems to me that’s the kind of goal all Americans would cheer.
