The kitchen light switches are push-button fixtures in this three-story, six-columned colonial mansion at 510 N. Ellis Ave. in Wheaton–which makes sense, since the house was built in 1904 for Herbert A. Schryver when such fixtures were in wide use. But this isn’t the kitchen that Schryver (Wheaton mayor from 1909 to 1913) and his family used. Renovated and expanded in 1999, it has all the latest amenities, including a spigot for instant boiling-hot water. Yet, the remodeling projects in the kitchen and elsewhere in the house, designated an official Wheaton landmark, included efforts to retain the century-old character. The home’s handcrafted moldings, for example, were replicated in the new and renovated rooms, as were its keyhole tracery windows. BY THE NUMBERS: The 14-room house has seven bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, two fireplaces, a tennis court and a three-car garage. BROKER: Koenig & Strey (Caryn and Stephen Haas).
