Was your wedding anything like Tony ‘n’ Tina’s? No. My wedding was typical Hollywood in one way and, in another, very small. [In 1962] I was just coming out of that teen idol period. Outside the church were hundreds of thousands of people and photographers. But at the actual reception, [Kay and I] only had 25 people–our parents and a few close friends.

You sing during this play–have you ever sung at a real wedding? At the wedding for Annette Funicello’s daughter, Gina. She’s my godchild. And, actually, because of that wedding, I got the idea [for the character] in “Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding.”

If Frankie and Annette married, what would they be like now? Actually, in the last movie we did, “Back to the Beach,” we were a married couple and return to the beach for a vacation. [The story goes that] I took her away from the beach because it had gotten so bad and polluted and we move to Ohio and have two kids. But if they were together today, I’m sure they’d be back on the beach. I’d own a surf shop and Annette would be a sex therapist now.
