The flutter: The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s 4th annual Butterfly Ball, at the museum in Chicago. Butterfly network: The event co-chairs and the museum president asked 14 people–CEOs such as Patrick G. Ryan of Aon and Christopher Galvin of Motorola, senior execs and even a family rep, Susan Crown–to contribute equal funding (a number no one will disclose). These 14 honorary “vice chairs” each received the last of the “Grand Nacre Motif” Lalique crystal butterflies, originally designed in 1919 by Rene Lalique himself. A 15th butterfly? To the museum, of course, for permanent display. The production called “dinner”: Like the Governor’s Ball at the Academy Awards, 650 guests in the two dining areas were served simultaneously, thanks to L.A.-based Kevin Charbonneau, of Wolfgang Puck Catering, whose staff was using radio headsets to coordinate the gala as if it were a Broadway show. Spreading wings: A record-breaking $850,000 was raised for exhibits and educational programs.
