Jane Scully, 53, who touched thousands of young lives as director of the Country Playhouse Childcare Center in Addison, died Sunday, June 23, of cancer in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Scully was born in Chicago, raised in Oak Park and graduated from Trinity High School. She met her husband, James, while he was a student at Fenwick High School. The couple continued their relationship while attending St. Louis University and married during the last year of school, said her daughter, Jennifer Anweiler. The couple moved back to Chicago and then to Addison where Mrs. Scully lived for 31 years. Mrs. Scully was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed reading books. More than 18 years ago, Mrs. Scully took a part-time teaching position at Country Playhouse Childcare Center in Addison. When her daughter was older, Mrs. Scully became director of the center. “She loved being with the children and every day watching them grow into their own personalities. They were like her second family,” her daughter said. For 30 years, Mrs. Scully and her family enjoyed vacationing in northern Wisconsin. her husband died in 1992. After her husband’s death in 1992, “when something broke, she fixed it. She never asked anybody for help. She did every thing on her own,” her daughter said. When she was diagnosed with cancer two and a half years ago, Mrs. Scully insisted on continuing to work while undergoing treatments. She was also looking forward to the birth of her second grandchild, her son-in-law Terry Anweiler said. “She was the best mother-in-law anyone could ever ask for,” he said. “She had a tremendous courage and strength. … She was very giving and was a very helpful and considerate friend to many,” her daughter added. Mrs. Scully is also survived by her brother, Edmund Finerty, and a grandson. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hums Funeral Home, 320 W. Lake St., Addison. Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home and mass will follow in St. Philip the Apostle Church, 1223 West Holtz Avenue, Addison.
