Your Page 1, June 19 story on the lack of special- education teachers floored me. Did anyone ever stop to think that the sharp increase in special education students is partly due to the gross lack of parenting in today’s children? Many of these students are labeled behaviorally disordered. Where do these kids learn their “behavioral” problems? Where do they learn to swear at others, start violent physical fights and disobey all authority?
These BD kids are labeled “special ed” right along with the students who have physical disabilities. Special-ed teachers who deal with BD kids have to put up with awful behavior for seven hours a day–and try to teach at the same time.
Those kids should be home getting a lesson in manners instead. If I went to work every day expecting to be hit, screamed at and spit on, I think I would get burned out from my job too.
