What a great contribution to society it would be if we would be able to create mutual trust and respect between our youngsters and the police.
This idea should be implemented everywhere, not only in Chicago.
Youngsters in the suburbs experience very much the same frustration when they are approached by the police, especially when they are driving their cars, with friends or alone.
For no apparent reason (not apparent to them, at least), they suddenly notice that they are being followed by a police car.
And then they find out that the officer wants them to stop.
Their immediate reaction is not the same that we, their grandparents, would have under similar circumstances.
Their reaction is one of panic because they feel confronted by someone who has the power, and the will, to make them feel unworthy and suspicious of God knows what.
I really hope this plan takes root.
If we treat youngsters and young adults with respect and dignity, most likely they will measure up to the level of our kindness and expectations.
