Lake Michigan is the next-door neighbor to this 22-room mansion at 419 Sheridan Rd. in Winnetka, completed in 1930 by architect Ernest Mayo. The home, which includes a solarium and a two-story-tall “great room,” is known as the Windsor House, for its original owners. Mayo decorated the exterior of the house and an attached coach house with lannonstone, a form of limestone, and characterized the architectural style as “pure French, one might call it Chateau in design.” The grounds include an Italian hand-carved sandstone wishing well (original to the house) and some 150 evergreens, each about 25 feet tall. BY THE NUMBERS: Seven bedrooms, 7 1/2 bathrooms, six fireplaces and 150 feet of beachfront.
