John Jay Berwanger, born Dubuque, Iowa, March 19, 1914, died June 26, 2002, family home in Oak Brook. Graduate of Dubuque High School 1932, attended University of Chicago 1932-1936, graduating with a Business Management Degree. Ran track-the Decatha- on, played rugby, Psi Upsilon Fraternity, played football-All American-won first Heisman Trophy 1935. Founded Jay Berwanger Inc. in 1948, retired Jan. 2002. Navy Pilot in WWII. Beloved husband of the late Philomela Berwanger and the late Jane Temple Berwanger; loving father of John Jay (Pat) Berwanger, Cuyler (Jackie) Berwanger, Helen (John) Tierney, Barbara Fewkes, Joseph “Marsh” Temple and Marianne Gerwing; brother of Betty Lungwitz, Eleanor Von Pein, the late Paul and Dorothy Berwanger; fond grandfather and great-grandfather. Memorial Service Tuesday, July 2, 11 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church, 120 E. First St., Hinsdale, IL, 60521.
