I thought Don Pierson wrote a fine piece about Jay Berwanger in the Friday Tribune. It is unlikely that current members of the Tribune’s sports department ever saw Mr. Berwanger play football. With the exception of interviews with Mr. Berwanger himself, few staff members, if any, ever met anyone who saw him play.
For your younger readers (50 and under) it should be pointed out that while Mr. Berwanger was creating his most impressive statistics, he was also playing defense full-time. Because of the substitution rules at the time, there was little opportunity for him to come out of a game for a breather.
