As parents of a resident at Lincoln Developmental Center, we want to applaud the Tribune’s Celeste Garrett for her article. We have been through a nightmare for the past several months, and we appreciate her coverage.
We cannot say the same of your editorial. One of the worst parts about the state’s attack on our son’s home has been the distortion of LDC’s reputation. We know LDC to have committed staff, quality programs and care that simply is not available elsewhere. To claim the efforts to close LDC are aimed at helping the residents is a sham and a travesty.
Where will Melvin go if LDC does close? To a community program that has poorer staffing, less professional staff and none of the medical and behavioral programs that benefit him at LDC?
The editorial writers seem to think they are the friends of the disabled. As parents who have labored out of love, privilege and knowledge to ensure our son’s care for 49 years, let me tell you that with friends like you, Melvin doesn’t need enemies.
