The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of a three-story, mixed-use development that would house a restaurant and condominiums on South Prospect Avenue in the city’s central business district.

The City Council is expected to vote Aug. 19 on the plan. If approved, it would clear the way for demolition of a vacant one-story building at 122 S. Prospect Ave. that most recently was occupied by the Bachmann True Value hardware store. The store closed more than a year ago.

Bull S. Saavedra, owner of the Hay Caramba! Mexican Restaurant, bought the building last year. Saavedra proposes to build a three-story building in its place, moving his restaurant into the first floor and selling four condos on the second and third floors.

The Planning and Zoning Commission last month recommended adoption of the Uptown plan.

A traffic study determined the new restaurant would have minimal impact, and another study showed there is adequate parking.
