Walter Dian, 87 years old, resident of Downers Grove for 58 years. Educated as a tool and die maker, he was a mechanical engineer with 47 patents to his credit. He automated many assembly processes and is noted for his development of the bicycle hub and derailleur. In retirement he pursued a love of golf and computer technology. He was a founding member of the Legends Golf League at the Village Greens of Woodridge Golf Club. Survived by daughters, Janet (James) D’Ambrosio and Judith (G. Andrew) Larsen; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 59 years, Zoe, nee Ardell, Dian. Visitation is Friday, July 26, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Toon Funeral Home, 4920 Main St., Downers Grove. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Clarendon Hills Cemetery, Cass Avenue, Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorials directed to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
