Jon Hilkevitch’s article (“CTA fare increase possible next year,” Metro, Aug. 8) on a possible fare hike caught my interest. I recently moved to Chicago from Portland, Ore., where public transportation is widespread and dependable–and where you pay by distance. The CTA’s coverage is good, and I applaud its affordable fares, but I wonder if it would do better with a pay-for-distance plan, similar to Metra?

Either way, I’ll continue to ride the CTA–$1.50 is a steal compared to parking, gas, and maintenance.
