What a beautiful story by Charles M. Madigan about his childhood. (“Black lung, heartbreak, courage: Memories of a coal miner’s son,” Tempo, Aug. 2.)
His words just flow so gracefully and put the reader in Portage, Penn. My father didn’t last as a coal miner in Spring Valley, so we moved to Chicago.
Thank you to the Madigan family for not giving up and to Mr. Madigan’s aunt for keeping their history.
