Breaking barriers
When Annice Canaday steps on the field as line judge for Benedict vs. South Carolina State at Williams-Brice Stadium on Sept. 7, she’ll be the first woman to officiate a Division I football game, the NCAA believes.
“I knew I was going to have to break barriers to do this, and I wasn’t going to let them run me out,” said Canady, 45, who has been subject to criticism since she started officiating in 1991. “I didn’t go out there as a female official. I went out as an official.”
Canady moved from youth leagues to high school games, proving herself worthy of being invited to work in the Division I-AA’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The conference’s supervisor of officials, NFL referee Johnny Grier, scouted Canady at a scrimmage and came away impressed.
“She was one of the best on the field,” he said.
