The recent stories by Howard Reich, Tribune arts critic (Sept. 1, 8 and 9), about the death and funeral of Lionel Hampton, were excellent and befitting a giant of jazz.

Because of Reich’s knowledge and interest in the music, the pieces were a joy to read. He gave a proper perspective to Hampton’s achievements, including the vibraphonist-bandleader’s connections to Chicago and his part in breaking down racial barriers.

The talent, enthusiasm and swing of Lionel Hampton represented the very best that jazz musicians have to offer, and I appreciate that Reich’s articles helped to remind everyone of that.
