When I read in the Tribune that Willa Cather’s “My Antonia” has been selected as the next book for Mayor Richard Daley’s reading club, I wondered why anyone would want to read about pioneer life in Nebraska.

Well, I was wrong. This book has all the elements of a blockbuster film. There’s sex, violence, suicides, discrimination, despair, unhappy marriages and greed galore in this book.

What “Little House on the Prairie” only hinted at, “My Antonia” delivers in a stunning account of life on the truly wild frontier.
