The first question that comes to mind when reading Rick Morrissey’s column on Todd Hundley (Tribune, Sept. 26) is: How can a writer defend the guy?

The answer is easy. Morrissey can’t. In the self-appointed role of Hundley apologist he makes no attempt to defend Hundley’s miserable performance. Instead, Morrissey drags others down to Hundley’s level (” . . . this separates him from other Cubs how, exactly?”) and heaves up an even lower-life (Randy Moss) to remind fans Hundley is not the absolute bottom of the barrel. High praise indeed.

I’m sorry that the real columnists who wrote “In the Wake of the News”–Arch Ward, David Condon, Bernie Lincicome–have, in turn, left Morrissey in their wake, but that doesn’t make it right for Morrissey to defend miserable performance.
