Fashion Week officially ended last week in New York, but the shows predict the future of fashion. Here’s a wrap of what New York style reporter Constance C.R. White foresees for spring 2003.

Out: 1970s. In: 1950s, as seen in . . . .

Waistlines: For those weary of low-rider attire, there’s hope on the horizon from several designers, in the form of shirt dresses as well as other ’50s staples such as tulle, fit and flare.

Dresses in general: After seasons of pants, these are back strong for day and evening.

Glamor: Gold, silver and satin everywhere. High, but not stiletto, heels. Big shoulders in suits and dresses. (OK, maybe those are more 1940s in inspiration.)

Miami Beach: Colors are sun-kissed.

Laborer looks: Carpenters’ pants came courtesy of hometown heroine Cynthia Rowley. And coverall-type suits and cargo-style workers’ pants celebrated the dirt-under-your-fingernails ethic.
