Cincinnati basketball coach Bob Huggins’ condition improved Sunday, a day after he had a heart attack at Pittsburgh International Airport during a recruiting trip.
Huggins, 49, remained in serious but stable condition at the Medical Center in Beaver, about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, said Tom Hathaway, the university’s assistant athletic director.
“He continues to make progress and the doctors are happy with the type of progress he’s made,” Hathaway said.
The Houston Rockets won’t find out if they can sign 7-foot-5-inch center Yao Ming until after the Asian Games end in Oct. 14, according to Li Furong, a deputy director of China’s State General Administration of Sports.

No. 1 Williams earns a breather
Serena Williams added another easy victory to her 2002 collection, beating Anastasia Myskina 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the $585,000 Sparkassen Cup at Leipzig, Germany.
“I’m going to take a deep breath and relax a little bit–I don’t really have any plans,” the No. 1-ranked Williams said.
Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Carlos Moya 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the final of the Salem Open at Hong Kong for only his second ATP title this year.

Roberts wins Texas Open
Loren Roberts sank four birdies on his last six holes at the La Cantera Golf Club just north of San Antonio to finish at 19-under 261 and win the Texas Open.
It was Roberts’ eighth career win on the PGA Tour and his first since 2000. Roberts shot a bogey-free 65 to finish three strokes ahead of Fred Couples, Fred Funk and Garrett Willis.
Martha Burk, chairwoman of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, said she was encouraged by a report that several members of Augusta National would seek to have the club admit at least one female.

Takahashi retains title in Berlin
Olympic champion Naoko Takahashi of Japan won the women’s portion of the Berlin Marathon for the second straight year, beating Mexico’s Adriana Fernandez by nearly three minutes.
The men’s race went to Raymond Kipkoech, who led five Kenyans to the top five places and finished in 2:06:47 on a cool and misty morning.
Dan Browne held off Kenyans Joshua Kipkemboi, the 2001 winner, and Jackson Kipngok to win the Twin Cities Marathon in 2:11:35 at St. Paul, Minn.
In the women’s race, Irina Bogacheva, a native of Kyrgyzstan who trains in Gainesville, Fla., pulled away from the field early and won in 2:29:39
