Nearly 10 years ago, Delbert Heard shot to death my niece, Zita Jones, along with two other people. Heard was tried, convicted and sentenced to death by a judge, who said this killer had “a malignant heart.” The judge spoke well for my family.

Now I read that the attorney general is trying to stop Gov. George Ryan from rushing the clemency procedures. I hope it works.

For the governor to rush through this in his last few months in office hurts.

My niece was a good kid who never gave anyone any trouble. She did not deserve to die. But this man does.
