– Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who hit .300 with 57 homers and 142 RBIs, was named The Sporting News player of the year. He received 197 votes from players, easily beating the Giants’ Barry Bonds, last year’s champion, who had 48 votes. Miguel Tejada was third and Alfonso Soriano fourth.
