Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I remember the good old day when RedEye was a free paper and Darrian Chapman was alive. It was enjoyable then to take a seat on the CTA train on Addison Street and read RedEye on the way downtown.

Things have changed since then. For one thing, I didn’t get a seat this morning. And it occurred to me I was in the middle of a Lawrence Block novel before I became enthralled with RedEye.

Luckily, I was still traipsing the novel around in my briefcase today (after all this time!), and so I fished it out and began reading it again while standing up.

RedEye isn’t successfully carving a niche. You should consider the standing CTA passengers and their below-the-fold dilemma. You’d have a niche of your own if your publication was issued in the form of a stone tablet with no fold and no pages to turn. You’d get “read” that way. We’ve all read the Ten Commandments, which were written in stone.

Don’t give up. My fruit fly’s been a RedEye fan his whole life. We’ll both be looking for you tomorrow, though he’s not expected to make it through the night.
